About the Artist: Mary Ellen Sisulak

In 1974, I received a BFA in painting. Searching for ways to express myself and make a living, I found my space in Door County, Wis. My husband and two sons have made this journey with me, and have assisted, inspired and aided in countless way to make this enterprise what it is.

In 1986, Turtle Ridge Studio Gallery was opened, and with our small staff, we produce a wide array of leather and fiber products.

In 2002, yearning to paint again and learn more about the wildlife that surrounds me, I received a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board / Peninsula Arts Association. This year-long study of the Mink River Estuary led to a new body of work: paintings transformed into prints on silk and on paper. We use this new and exciting digital technology to create silk scarves, shawls and fiber bags, as well as limited edition prints on paper and silk. I feel fortunate to grow as an artist and present my new work in leather and fiber to our appreciative customers.

My themes are inspired by the natural world. I work in a style that depicts subject matter, but distills it. Color, shape, texture and detail are the most significant visual elements of each piece. I start with a drawing or idea for surface design, then stylize and simplify until it translates as an embossed design into the leather.

Narrative is an  important part of each piece I produce. There is a theme and philosophy that accompanies my work. An example may be an embossed leather design which centers around a beech tree in our woods. The shapes of seeds and leaves found surrounding the tree become a part of the design, making the theme complete, by describing a sample of that particular environment.

I use a variety of leathers to get the effect I want. All are domestic, such as cowhide, pigskin, goatskin or sheepskin. The inside of the bag is designed with leather and sturdy fabric pockets. Hardware is kept minimal and functional, all topped off with my signature turtle charm.
